Chimney Sweeping

Bennetts Chimney Sweep have years of experience cleaning all types of chimneys in West Sussex, East Sussex, Surrey and Kent. For a typical chimney sweep please allow 30 to 45 minutes.

How it works: A large dust proof cover is placed in front of the fireplace, specially made sheets are used for covering the opening of the fireplace and high quality equipment and vacuum are used to ensure the chimney is cleaned thoroughly and all soot and debris is contained.

For your peace of mind and for the benefit of your home insurance we can provide proof of chimney sweeping on request.

How often should I have my chimney swept?

As a general rule of thumb; have your chimney swept once a year. For your home insurance to be valid you will likely be required to have your chimney cleaned annually.

Depending on how often you use your chimney and what fuel is burned the following rules should apply:

  • Wood: Quarterly when in use
  • Coal: Quarterly when in use
  • Oil: Once a year
  • Gas: Once a year
  • Smokeless Fuel: At least once a year

How much soot can there actually be in my chimney?

Below is an example of the amount of soot that can accumulate in a chimney after one year of use. As always, protective sheets and industrial vacuum cleaner were used to contain the soot successfully.

How much does a chimney sweep cost?

Please see the Chimney Sweep Prices & Services page for all costs.

Chimney Sweep Preparation

There are two things to consider:

  • Put the fire out the night before, or remove any hot ashes before arrival.
  • Move any furniture or ornaments from in front of the fireplace.

Will there be a lot of mess?

Chimney sweeping is a relatively clean process as we take every precaution to prevent any soot or mess being allowed to come into the room.

The only time there may be a small amount of dust will be when removing a blockage or bird’s nest. We are fully insured in the event of any accidents.
